Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Disclosure Service offered by
Chester-le-Street & District CVS and Volunteer Bureau

Who should have a CRB Disclosure?

People who may have one to one access to children or vulnerable adults. This applies to
paid staff and volunteers.

How long does the process take?

As soon as the forms have been filled in and checked over by an appointed member of Chester-le-Street & District CVS and Volunteer Bureau staff they are then forwarded to the CRB. Once CRB receive the form it is processed and we cannot estimate how long an individual application may take to return although typically many are returned within a month.

How much does it cost?

All organisations using the CRB service are required to become members of Chester-le-Street & District Council for Voluntary Service and Volunteer Bureau and register to use our CRB service.
Details of membership packages and costs of CRB’s can be found on the membership page of this website .

Before any Disclosures can be processed an agreement form will need to be completed. This is part of a pack of information you will receive if you register to use our CRB service. This details the minimum requirements the CVS and Volunteer Bureau expect you to comply with as determined by the Criminal Records Bureau Code Of Practice. Please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to request a pack. Until this form is returned no Disclosures can be processed.

The individual requiring the CRB Disclosure needs to then call the CVS and Volunteer Bureau on (0191) 3892947 or (0191) 3891960 and make an appointment to visit the Centre with the required identification documentation. A list is enclosed in the pack for you to photocopy for applicants, they will also be reminded when they phone for their appointment. Where an organisation has 3 or more individuals that need Disclosures at the same time the CVS and Volunteer Bureau staff offer a service whereby we will visit the organisation at a mutually agreed time and complete all the paperwork for multiple Disclosures together. We are also able to offer training and register staff members within your organisation to complete Disclosure application forms and view applicants evidence themselves. For further information on this option please contact us directly.

When CRB Disclosures are returned, we will receive a copy and so will the applicant. Your organisation must select an individual to whom these certificates will be sent (as detailed in the agreement form). This certificate must be stored safely and securely in a locked, non-portable storage container and be kept for no longer than 6 months.

If you find that the Disclosure you have received has disclosed a criminal record, then you must act in accordance with your own risk assessment policy/process. It is vital that your organisation also have knowledge of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act as not all people who have a criminal record should be barred from working with you. Chester-le-Street & District CVS & Volunteer Bureau cannot make a final recruitment decision on your behalf. This pack contains useful information on many on these issues.

Remember……….

Chester-le-Street & District CVS and Volunteer Bureau operate an exemplary CRB service and are at hand to provide information and advice at every step of this process.
